How to Make Cannabutter: A Step-By-Step Guide

You’ll need to complete two major steps before you have fresh, ready cannabutter that’s ready for recipes. First, you need to decarboxylate your flower. Then, you need to infuse your butter. We’ll detail both processes below.

Before You Start: Decarboxylation

Spoiler alert: you can’t just mash up cannabis flower, throw it in some butter, and eat it. Well, you technically could, but it won’t work.

That’s because your body can’t orally absorb THC unless it’s been heat-activated first. This heat-activation process, known as decarboxylation, maybe a mouthful to say. But it’s actually not that hard to do! Here’s how it works:

  1. Preheat your oven to 245 degrees. You don’t want to decarboxylate at too high of a temperature, because then THC will begin to decompose.
  2. After your oven is preheated, cook your cannabis for 30-40 minutes. Stir every 10 minutes to ensure even cooking. If your cannabis is old and dry, it may take less time to decarboxylate. You’ll know your flower is ready once it turns a brownish-tan.

Cannabutter Recipe

Once you have decarboxylated flower, you’re ready to get to the fun part!

Ingredients and Tools:

  • 10 grams decarboxylated cannabis flower
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup of water
  • Saucepan
  • Cheesecloth
  • Funnel
  • Jar

Instructions:

  • Grind decarboxylated cannabis into fine powder. You may want to use a grinder for this step.
  • Melt butter into a saucepan on low heat. You may wish to add a cup of water to regulate the butter’s temperature and prevent it from burning.
  • Mix ground cannabis into melted butter with a cooking spoon.
  • Simmer cannabutter mixture on low heat (about 160 degrees or so) for between 2 and 3 hours. Stir occasionally and make sure you don’t let the mixture boil.
  • Place cheesecloth across the top of a funnel. Pour the cannabutter mixture over the cheesecloth to strain it into the jar. Don’t squeeze the cheesecloth. That will force plant matter into your cannabutter, giving it a slightly “green” flavor.
  • Refrigerate the jar of cannabutter until it solidifies. You may notice water rise to the top once the cannabutter is solid. If you do, just pour the extra water out once the cannabutter has solidified.

Once it is set, it’s time to check your dosage. The THC content of cannabutter can depend on several variables. For instance, small changes in cooking temperature and time can cause significant potency differences.

To test your cannabutter’s potency, spread ¼ to ½ teaspoon across a snack like a cracker or piece of toast. This will give you all the information you need to dial in the perfect “standard” dosage.
